Ranjan Kumar Memorial Lecture Series

Dated 25 March 2014, the Start-up Innovation and Incubation Centre (SIIC) and Entrepreneurship Cell of IIT Kanpur jointly organised the first lecture of Ranjan Kumar Memorial Talk Series. It was the first lecture of the series, supported by the IITK batch of 1986 in memory of their batch-mate Mr Ranjan Kumar. Mr Ranjan was a distinguished entrepreneur who had founded Cygnus Soft, because he believed in the importance of IITians being job creators.

The first lecture was delivered by Mr Ashish Gupta (B.Tech/CSE/1998, President’s Gold Medalist) and PhD. in Computer Science from the Stanford University. He is now the co-founder of Helion Ventures Partners and Junglee. In his talk, he recounted the good old days at IIT Kanpur, his love and passion still alive for Hall 3( his hostel at IITK), his pride for the fact that his spouse had a better rank in JEE, and of course the bulla (casual talks amongst at friends in IITK lingo)sessions.

He gave an insight into taking calculated risks- to know the difference between what to do and how to do. Risk lies in not about what one does, but rather how one does and what back-ups one has. He talked of taking calculated risk- not what you do, but how you do. He also mentioned what it takes to stay away from the herd, the need of an urge within oneself to mark his footprint on the stands of time. Everything in life, like what career we choose, what friend we find, what we do in the moment, what we plan to do tomorrow or who we choose to live with, should be subjected to WHY, WHAT and HOW!
